Tips for Early Diagnosis of Osteosarcoma in Children

Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that is more common in children and adolescents than adults.  Early diagnosis is key to improving treatment success and outcomes.

Be on the lookout for persistent or worsening bone pain, swelling or tenderness near a bone, difficulty moving a joint, or a lump or mass under the skin.  These can be symptoms of osteosarcoma.

Risk factors for osteosarcoma include having a family history of bone cancer, going through teenage growth spurts, being tall for a specific age, previous radiation therapy for another cancer (especially at a young age or with high doses), or having certain benign bone diseases.

If you notice any of these symptoms or have risk factors for osteosarcoma, it's important to talk to a doctor.  They may order imaging tests or a biopsy to diagnose the condition.
